Wedding at Archbishop’s Palace Maidstone

Joanne and David got married 19 February 2010 at The Archbishop’s Palace it was a cold crisp day. I meet the groom half hour before the marriage ceremony started taking photographs tried several backgrounds for the photos. Bride arrived just before it all started, She looked stunning wouldn’t take me out though I asked, Ha Ha. She  checked the register and went in to get married. I was one of the first to  congratulate them on their marriage.

There was only 40 guests every body getting on with each over and having a good laugh. After the photographs were taken we went onto the wedding reception at the Holiday Inn Maidstone. The room had been decorated by some of the family with posters up of the couple. You had a choice of starters and buffet main meal it was very taste. As a special thank you I came back with a  edited  photograph and printed and  framed for the bride and groom.

Is your photographer always looking  to capture the fun moments at your wedding. When I’m at a wedding you have to your wits about you, hear someone laugh, scream talk loudly, you have to be ready with the camera to capture it. I have had the brides dress falling of GOT THAT PHOTO cannot show it bride forbid me.

Below the groom and the best  man  singing in the rain. I had groom running after the  bride caught the dress with his foot pulled the dress right of  her left her in her underwear I got the shot just as the dress  ripped but the videographer got the all of it, It should have  been shown on the television for best wedding clip it was hilarious event the bride was laughing her head of, it was her idea for a shot she had see in a magazine.

I even caught the groom putting is shoes out the door to be cleaned outside the bridal suite, I was walking to my room.

After taking photographs of Cheryl and Phillip at The Little Silver Country Hotel I would recommend this venue to bride and grooms, It has a light airy bridal suite wonderful for photographs of the bride. The gardens have areas for different style of photography. The beautiful garden gazebo look wonderful during the day and lit up at night.

The Oast house is design in an octagonal shape, the  dance floor as sparkling chandeliers and stained glass windows which ensures that your wedding is held in Kent’s venue. The venue  as a license to hold the marriage ceremony in either the beautiful garden gazebo or the magnificent Kent Hall. It is a good all round venue for the smaller weddings from 30 to 120 guests. Plenty of scope for every one to enjoy them-selfs.

Weddings at Penshurst Place

I have photographed 16 wedding at this venue the first was in 1991, It is one the best wedding venues in Kent around for photographs in the spring, summer, autumn and winter the gardens look great all year round. would like to photograph more weddings at Penshurst Place. It has the most picturesque formal gardens you could imagine.

Set in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, Penshurst Place, although medieval in origin, retains the warmth and character of a much-loved family home.
It has been the abode of kings and noblemen throughout history and the ancestral seat of the Sidney family since 1552.

Since Penshurst Place was first given approval as premises for civil weddings in 1995, hundreds of weddings have taken place within the walls of the original 14th century defended manor house. Kiley and Steve’s wedding at Penshurst Place

Kiley and Steve got married at Penshurst Place in December. It was a cold wet day. The bride was an one and half hours late that affected the taking of photographs later in the day because it was getting dark outside after the wedding ceremony. I had another photographer covering the groom at the hotel and arrivals at the venue.

The grooms father had come out of hospital (he had been seriously ill but he wanted to be there, the wedding was brought forward by 6 months for him) to see his son get married, he look good on the day very happy, joys of the occasion but sadly he died 3 days later.

Steve and Kiley had come back from Dubia to get married and as now moved back picked over 200 photographs for their story book album. The cost was in excess of £3.5k.

I have photographed 16 wedding at this venue the first was in 1991, It is one the best venues around for photographs in the spring, summer, autumn and winter the gardens look great all year round.

“Why are wedding photographers so expensive?”

This is just one question you might hear from people who have just had the shock of their lives after receiving a quote from a wedding photographer. When a photographer quotes £2000 for an 8-hour wedding shoot, the immediate assumption is that he/she is earning £250 per hour. But if you take a closer look behind the scenes and see what really goes on then you will realise that wedding photographers make nowhere near that kind of money.
Contrary to what people believe, the disheartening fact is that most wedding photographers actually undercharge.
“You are kidding me right?” I hear you say.
Well, instead of asking why the expensive photographer is so expensive, ask yourself this.
“Why is the cheap photographer so cheap?
What corners are they cutting?
Are they insured?
Are they using the right equipment?
How much experience do they have?
You see, what happens is that many amateur photographers enter the market, confident of their photography skills, and naively start trading without knowing the fundamental elements required to be a wedding photographer.
Most ‘professional wedding photographers’ are running a business. And, as with any type of business, there are many costs involved in running it. However, due to their lack of experience and knowledge of the industry, amateur photographers do not realise how much they need to invest to start a successful photography business. The mindset of most amateurs is that as long as they cover for their labour costs they will be fine. As a result, their prices are a lot less than a professional who has been doing it for years.
By not calculating the proper costs and charging accordingly, amateur photographers are forcing the professionals to lower their prices. This is damaging not only to themselves, as they later realise they are not really making a significant income, but to other photographers and the industry itself.
So, why is wedding photography so expensive?
For a wedding photographer, it’s not just a case of turning up and taking a few well-composed shots and then handing you a CD or DVD. There is a lot more involved in creating the perfect memory of your wedding.
Let’s take a look at some of the main costs a wedding photographer must consider when working out their prices.
Probably the most important (and obvious) part is the labour. An average wedding can last from anything between 6-10hrs. Your photographer will most likely arrive hours before the main event to capture the small details, like the bride and groom getting ready, decorations, venue layout, vehicles etc… Then comes the main ceremony, reception and the send-off. During the wedding, they will be running around, ducking, diving, twisting, turning, crawling and climbing, all in order to catch those special moments that would otherwise be forgotten.
Doing all that continuously for 8-10hrs is physically draining.
And to ensure they capture everything, they will probably have taken between 800 – 1500 photos by the end of the day. Also, if your photographer comes with an assistant, then the cost goes up, as they have to pay them as well.
Unseen Work
Most people are unaware that a photographer’s job does not end when the wedding does. It is not uncommon for people to think that it’s a simple case of downloading the images from the memory card and putting them on a disk or uploading them onto a website.
The fact is, while the newlywed’s are jetting off on honeymoon to enjoy their first moments of marital bliss, the photographer is still working on producing a timeless memento of their special day. Depending on how many photos were taken, they will spend anything from 6-14 days processing all the images of the day, getting rid of any blemishes, cropping, applying creative effects if need be and adjusting colour and contrast.
Now, lets take that £2000 fee and break it down to an hourly rate, with the assumption that it takes the photographer 5 full working days to process the photos:
Wedding Day: 8 hours
Travel to and from wedding: 2 hours
Post Production: 40 hours
Total Hours worked: 50 hours
Hourly Rate – £2000 ÷ 50 = £40 per hour
As you can see, it’s nowhere near the £250 an hour that is assumed. The hourly rate is in fact 84% less! And that’s before we even take into account all the other costs involved.
Sometimes it’s impossible for one person to process so many photos, especially if the photos are required to be delivered within a short time frame. In this instance, it may be necessary for a photographer to outsource some of the processing to someone else. Professional photo retoucher’s can cost hundreds of pounds per hour!
The equipment your photographer brings to the shoot is no ordinary camera equipment. Professional digital cameras and lenses can cost anything from £1200 – £5000. And that’s just for the primary camera body and lens! A good photographer will always bring a back up camera(s) as well as various types of lenses in case the primary fails. On top of that, they need spare batteries, memory cards, filters, flashes and other portable lighting equipment. On average, a photographer could be carrying up to £15,000 worth of gear at your wedding. Outside the wedding, you need to consider the cost of owning or leasing a photo studio, colorama (backgrounds), studio lighting, computers and professional photo editing software like Photoshop. The latest versions of Photoshop products range from £557 – £2264! Then there’s the cost of upgrading every time a newer version is released.
With equipment of that value in a crowded environment like a wedding, photographers (smart ones anyway) insure all their gear in case of damage or theft. In addition, Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity are essential for any freelance photographer, especially those who shoot weddings. Each of these insurance types can add up to several hundred pounds a year.
Marketing and Advertising
Nowadays the most effective way for photographers to market themselves is probably online with a high quality professional website. Most photographers don’t have web design skills so they have no choice but to employ a professional web designer.
Getting a website designed could cost anything from £1200 – £4000. And let’s not forget the cost of maintenance, updates and technical support.
Then there’s the recurring cost of advertising. Although word of mouth is a great and effective form of advertising, it simply does not provide enough exposure. To maintain any chance of having a continuous flow of clients, a photographer must spend hundreds of pounds on leaflets, business cards, online ads, magazine and newspaper ads and any other form of appropriate advertising to reach a wider audience. All this adds up to thousands of pounds per year.
Accountant and lawyer
Anybody running a business will almost definitely need a lawyer and accountant. Although it can be easy to keep count of earnings, when it comes to matters of income tax, national insurance, corporate tax, self-assessment or anything involving Inland Revenue, an accountant becomes necessary. Lawyers are necessary for any legal matters…obviously…  And we all know how expensive they are!
Travel / Location
If the photographer lives miles away from the venue or, if the wedding is taking place in multiple locations and the photographer is required to capture everything at both venues, then fuel or travel costs may be factored into the price.
What about all those extra’s that wedding photographers offer? Depending on quality and size, a storybook album could cost anything from £150 – £2000! Yes, even I was shocked when I found out!
Some photographers offer online galleries to host your images so you can show friends all over the world. Then there are those that provide prints of your photos. All these additional touches have additional costs.
Irregular Income
Unlike a normal 9-5 job, a wedding photographer’s working hours and income are not regular. Most weddings happen on a Saturday or Sunday and mainly during the summer season. How many weekends are there in a year let alone in summer? Unless the photographer is in great demand, it is unlikely they will be booked for every weekend of the season. Even if they did, I doubt that it’s enough to survive for the entire year, especially if they live in a city like London. Other than those photographers who have a large client base or own a photo studio, you will find that most freelance wedding photographers take on various other types of photography jobs in order to top up their income. Even this is not regular or guaranteed so you may see your photographer working behind the bar at your local pub during the cold seasons…
Experience / Education
Most decent wedding photographers didn’t just buy a digital camera one day and decide, “I’m going to photograph weddings!”
Nearly all professional photographers invested a lot of time and money on formal and informal education on the subject. That includes courses, seminars, on-the-job training and apprenticeships. Even after gaining the knowledge, they spend years perfecting their practical skills operating various types of camera equipment, image composition, lighting, posing etc…And they have to repeat the whole learning process again as technology rapidly evolves.
Final Thought
So, why are wedding photographers so expensive?
The answer is simple; they invested a lot of time and money developing their business into a solid and reliable wedding photography service. And they did this because they are passionate about photography and take great pride in their work. Considering this, can you really place a monetary value on expertise?
Most newcomers are equally passionate and skilled, but may lack the necessary experience and knowledge to cope with the pressures of photographing somebody else’s wedding.
Next time you receive a quote and you think it’s a bit high, take all of the above into consideration before making a decision.
You also need to ask the photographer key questions and find out more about them and base your decision on that.
Check the photographers portfolio. Are the photos up to the standards you require?
Do they have Public Liability Insurance? If not, who will cover for damages if the photographer accidentally injures someone?
Do they use professional equipment?
How much experience have they had photographing weddings or events?
Are they authorised to provide services to the public?
Do they charge extra for each photo you keep?
In the end, it is your wedding day, and you should go with what you feel is right for you in terms of quality and budget. Just remember, hiring a photographer is not a purchase, it’s an investment. As with any kind of investment, you get what you pay for!
You need to ask yourself How important are memories of your wedding to you and your family?”

Cheryl & Phillip wedding album photographs taken 21 June 2009 at The Little Silver Country Hotel. It was a bright sunny day, I arrived at 11 am to capture the arrival of the groom and best men in a limousine. They had been for breakfast with champagne in Blackheath then onto the venue.

The day went well with the bride and brides maids being photographed in the bridal suite back to the groom getting ready. Then to the  ceremony with all the guests seated outside and the toastmaster John Yarrow organizing the guests. Bride arrives, I have permission to take photographs throughout the ceremony where ever I want, the day goes well and you can view the album that was chosen by the bride and groom.

The Mitsubishi Click system is ideally geared up to the requirements
of event photographers and is the engine driving the workflow that
allows Ricky Turrell to run his profitable business Anyone who is
connected with event photography will tell you that the essence of a
successful business is the ability tobe able to operate at speed while still
delivering quality that will keep the customer happy. As a photographer of
some 30 years standing Ricky Turrell understands that requirement better
than most, and his event photography business, AI Events, has relied on
Mitsubishi printers virtually since they were first introduced and it’s been a
long and successful relationship. “When I started out selling event
photographs it was a very different business to the one it is today,”says Ricky.
“I would shoot pictures at an event onfilm, would head back to a local lab and
get them printed to finished prints 8×6 in size and then get back to the event

because of the wastage and I realised as soon as I saw the portable printers

Mitsubishi CP3800DWs and CP9550DWs, and for the bigger jobs where

smaller events can be catered for using the Click Lite unit. Both units
offer a touch screen interface which allows images to be displayed to
clients and printed directly off screen without the intervention of an
additional computer. “It’s a really good set-up to work with,” says
Ricky. “The quality of the prints is first class and the two printers
cover all the eventualities. I use the CP9550DW to produce 9×6in
prints, but the CP3800DW allows me to go bigger and to produce
10×8in or even 12×8in prints in as little as 35 seconds if I want to.
This can be really useful at something like a ladies festival, where
they have seen 9×6in prints before and are really looking
for something a little different. I can produce a 12×8in print
and put it in a silver metal frame and it’s an instant gift which I can
sell for a premium. My 9×6in prints will usually sell for around £10 -
£15 each, but if I sell a 12×8in print in a frame I can charge £20-35 each,
and all for very little extra effort.”Not only does the CP3800DW produce
a print quickly, but it does so without any sacrifice to the resolution
quality of the print. Mitsubishi’s new colour management engine
ensures vivid images, deeper black tones and smear-free gradation with

says Ricky. “Some of my photographers sometimes work with a laptop
and a printer at an event, but if they use the touch screen system featured
on the Click then my reckoning based on past jobs is that they would make
an extra £150 a night on sales because it’s so much easier to show a client
what they are going to get. You can pull up their picture,crop into it and
make any adjustments that are necessary all by touching the screen and
then print it out on the spot.
“I always make sure that the Click is set up so that it’s at eye level and the
image quality will be nice and bright and easy to see. If you use a laptop
the images will often look dark if you view them from an angle and it’s
not so appealing. It also takes much longer to work on an image using a
laptop, and this business is really all about speed.
“My motto for the business is ‘Flash, Cash and Dash.’ I flash them,
take the cash off them and they dash off with the photo.
The Mitsubishi system allows me to do exactly that, and what
could be simpler?”

Finding a wedding photographer

Finding a wedding photographer can be a tricky business so it is important to speak to as many photographers as possible to see what they  can offer. You can also ask  your friends who did their wedding photography. You have to decide what style  you want traditional wedding photography or reportage wedding photography some call it photojounalistic wedding photography.
